This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Gardeners Ickenham manages safety for our gardening and grounds maintenance services across our local area. We are committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors, contractors, and members of the public who may be affected by our activities.

Our aim is to prevent injury, ill health, and damage to property by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and putting in place sensible, proportionate control measures for all gardening tasks and related operations.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Gardeners Ickenham is responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that adequate resources, information, training, and supervision are provided to maintain high standards of health and safety.

Management will regularly review working methods, equipment, and materials used in our gardening work to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and accepted best practice within the horticultural and landscaping industry.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring day-to-day work on site, ensuring that safety procedures are followed, and that any concerns or incidents are reported promptly so that appropriate action can be taken.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees of Gardeners Ickenham have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions at work. This includes colleagues, clients, members of the public, and other contractors working nearby.

Employees must follow all safety instructions and procedures, use provided protective equipment correctly, and cooperate fully with management in maintaining a safe workplace. Any hazards, unsafe conditions, near misses, or incidents must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager so that they can be investigated and addressed.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Gardeners Ickenham will carry out risk assessments for our gardening, maintenance, and landscaping activities. These assessments will consider hazards such as manual handling, use of power tools and machinery, chemical use, slips, trips and falls, traffic movement, working at height, and adverse weather conditions.

We will maintain good housekeeping on site, keeping access routes clear and removing waste materials promptly to reduce the risk of slips, trips, and other accidents.

Manual Handling and Physical Work

Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, bending, and other physical tasks. Gardeners Ickenham will assess manual handling risks and introduce measures such as team lifts, use of trolleys or barrows, and task rotation to reduce the risk of strain or injury.

Staff will receive guidance on safe lifting techniques and are expected to work within their physical capabilities, asking for assistance when required and not attempting to move loads that are too heavy or awkward.

Accidents, Incidents and First Aid

All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported to management as soon as practicable. Records will be kept and reviewed to identify patterns and opportunities for improvement.

Suitable first aid arrangements will be in place, including access to first aid supplies and trained first aiders where necessary. In the event of a serious incident, emergency services will be contacted and the area made safe to prevent further harm.
